The United States military carried out an airstrike targeting Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia’s southern Jubbaland regional state on July 8, the U.S. military said on Friday. In a statement, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said the strike was conducted approximately 90 kilometres northwest of Kismayo, a key port city in southern Somalia.
AFRICOM did not provide details on casualties or assess the outcome of the operation. The strike is part of ongoing U.S. military support for Somali authorities in their campaign against Al-Shabaab, an Islamist militant group linked to al Qaeda that has waged an insurgency in Somalia for more than a decade. The United States has regularly conducted airstrikes against Al-Shabaab targets in coordination with the Somali government, targeting the group’s fighters, commanders and infrastructure.
