The head of the UNHCR has announced the completion of the first voluntary repatriation operation of Somali refugees from Yemen in 2026. The refugees returned to Somalia by choice as part of a structured return program.

The operation is part of a broader initiative supporting Somali refugees who voluntarily choose to return home, ensuring that their journey is safe, dignified, and well-coordinated.

During the operation, logistical support and essential assistance were provided to refugees throughout their travel, as well as upon arrival and during the initial phase of reintegration in Somalia.

UNHCR stated that this marks the beginning of a series of planned return operations, noting that conditions in parts of Somalia have gradually improved.

The agency emphasized that all returns are strictly voluntary and conducted in line with international human rights and refugee protection standards to guarantee the safety and rights of those returning.

Yemen has hosted large numbers of Somali refugees who fled conflict and humanitarian crises in Somalia, and this program offers them an opportunity to return home peacefully and rebuild their lives.
